Gifts of the Holy Spirit

1. Wisdom Wisdom is the highest of the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit and enables us to see everything—ourselves, others, creation, and events—through the lens of God’s perspective (CCC 1831, 1845, 2037). It helps us to love spiritual things more than earthly ones and to desire God above all. Wisdom perfects our charity by orienting our judgment and decisions according to divine truth. This gift allows us to appreciate the mysteries of faith more deeply and to recognize God’s presence and work in all aspects of life. It does not mean knowing everything but seeing the bigger picture through the light of eternity, finding joy in God’s will even amid trials.

2. Understanding Understanding helps us grasp the truths of our faith more profoundly (CCC 1831). While faith gives us the ability to believe what God has revealed, understanding deepens that belief by helping us to see the inner meaning of those truths. It enables us to penetrate the mysteries of Scripture, the teachings of the Church, and the sacraments with clarity. This gift helps us overcome confusion, doubt, and error, and grow in our relationship with God. It brings light to the intellect and helps us live out our faith with confidence and conviction.

3. Counsel (Right Judgment) Counsel is the gift that enables us to make right moral decisions according to God’s will, especially in difficult or uncertain situations (CCC 1831). It perfects the virtue of prudence and allows us to discern the proper course of action by prompting our conscience with divine guidance. This gift is especially important when faced with complex choices where human reasoning may fall short. Counsel helps us speak and act with wisdom, seek advice when needed, and give good advice to others. It is the Holy Spirit guiding us from within, ensuring that our decisions align with truth, love, and the teachings of the Church.

4. Fortitude (Courage) Fortitude gives us the strength to stand firm in our faith, resist temptation, and endure suffering for the sake of the Gospel (CCC 1808, 1831). It empowers us to overcome fear, remain faithful in trials, and defend our beliefs even when it is difficult or unpopular. Fortitude enables us to choose good despite opposition and to persevere in doing what is right. This gift is crucial for living a courageous Christian life, especially in today’s world where faith may be challenged. It reflects the strength of the martyrs and saints who bore witness to Christ with heroic love.

5. Knowledge Knowledge allows us to see the created world and all human experiences as part of God’s divine plan (CCC 1831). It gives us the ability to judge rightly concerning matters of faith and right living, especially in discerning how to use temporal goods for eternal ends. Through this gift, we recognize that all creation points to God and that we are stewards of His gifts, not owners. Knowledge helps us avoid placing false value on earthly things and teaches us to keep our hearts set on what is eternal. It bridges faith and reason, helping us to live with both intelligence and holiness.

6. Piety (Reverence) Piety fills our hearts with a deep love for God as our Father and a desire to worship Him in truth and devotion (CCC 1831). It also inspires respect for others as children of God and members of His family. This gift leads us to honor the Church, the saints, sacred Scripture, and all things related to the divine. It produces in us a joyful willingness to serve God and others with humility and obedience. Piety strengthens our desire for prayer and liturgy, makes us more charitable, and helps us live our faith sincerely and reverently.

7. Fear of the Lord (Wonder and Awe) Fear of the Lord is not about being afraid of God, but a profound respect and awe for His majesty, power, and justice (CCC 1831, 2144–2145). It reminds us of the greatness of God and our dependence on Him, leading us to avoid sin out of love rather than fear of punishment. This gift fosters humility and helps us recognize our smallness before God’s glory, while trusting in His mercy. Fear of the Lord keeps our hearts open to grace and inspires a healthy vigilance in our spiritual life. It is the beginning of wisdom, and a foundation for true holiness.
